Commandments Regarding "Evil Speech"
There are many commandments which can be violated when someone speaks "Evil Speech". Two negative and two positive examples:
(1) Leviticus 19:15, "Lo telech rachil b'ameicha,"
- Do not go about as a talebearer among your people. This is the basic prohibition against speaking Evil Speech
(2) Leviticus 19:14, "Lifnei 'iver lo titen michshol"
- Do not place a stumbling block before the blind. One who involves himself in Evil Speech is helping others to violate the prohibitions as well.
(3) Deuteronomy 24:9, "Zachor et asher asa H' Elokeicha l'Miriam"
- Remember what God did to Miriam. When Miriam spoke negatively against her brother Moses, she was afflicted with tzara'at (leprosy).
(4) Leviticus 19:18, "V'ahavta l'rei'echa kamocha"
- Love your neighbor as yourself. This is the source of the "do unto others" rule, that we should treat others the way we would want to be treated.

4. A healing tongue is a tree of life, but if there is perverseness in it, it causes destruction by wind.
Pro 18:21
21. Death and life are in the hand of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its produce.
Pro 21:23
23. He who watches his mouth and his tongue guards his soul from troubles.
Mat 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
38This is the first and greatest commandment.

By refusing to speak disparagingly about others, and by refraining from being judgemental about things we often don't really understand, we bring peace and blessing to our community and our nation.
