Rev. Timothy Wright’s Wife and Grandson Killed in Auto AccidentPosted on July 6th, 2008 by Jan Barrett in Religious News, Society and Culture Read 6,127 times.
Reverend Timothy Wright, otherwise known as the “godfather of gospel” was in an automobile accident Friday night that killed his two passengers, which were his wife, Betty Wright and D.J, his 14 year old grandson.
The Reverend was driving on Interstate 80 in Greene Township, about 60 miles west of Manhattan according to state police. They were on their way home to Roosevelt Long Island. They were returning from a church conference in Detroit when they were hit head on by a car going the wrong way down the interstate. The car going the wrong way was driven by John Pick, 44, of Lewisburg, Pa. Pick was also killed in the crash. Police are waiting for a toxicology report to see if he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The Reverend is the pastor at Grace Tabernacle Christian Center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY. He has released more than a dozen gospel recordings. The parishioners from Grace Tabernacle gathered at the church doorsteps Saturday night to place candles in front of a photograph of Betty Wright. Inside the church they covered her chair with a shroud.
“I would have to say she was a jewel,” said Phillip Culver, a congregant. “She was right by her husband’s side and gave so much support to the church.”
Cynthia Boone said “I’m believing in God now.”
Bishop James Gaylord, a prelate with the Church of God in Christ said, “They were like a match made in heaven. She will be a tremendous loss to the community as well as to Christendom.”
Reverend Wright was listed in critical condition late Saturday night at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville Pa.
Our heart and prayers go out to the Reverend Wright for this loss.
The church plans on holding a special prayer service Sunday at 5:00 pm.
Update: Newsday.com are claiming that Wright’s grandson, D.J. Wright is in fact alive but is in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.
Saints, this is so heartwretching.

My niece told me last night that the grandson died yesterday morning. Is this article saying the boy is still alive?
I also heard that when the grandson's father heard his son had been in the accident that he had a heart attack.

His grandson did die. There are two articles that i've read after some friends at the aim convention, called and informed that Rev Wright was in an accident.
The new article does state that his grandson died, and rev timothy wright has opened his eyes. I have not read anything about the son having a heart attack.

NYC church prays for gospel singing pastor By SAMANTHA GROSS – 14 hours ago
NEW YORK (AP) — The congregation led by gospel singer Timothy Wright gathered for praise and remembrance Sunday, praying for their pastor's recovery from a head-on car crash that killed his wife and grandson.
The Friday crash with a driver going the wrong wan on a Pennsylvania interstate critically injured the Grammy-nominated Wright and killed co-pastor Betty Wright. Their 14-year-old grandson, D.J. Wright, died Saturday at the hospital.
I just found this article. It's not the whole article, just the part that addressed the grandson.
You know how people start rumors about people dying and they haven't died. It happened to my pastor a few years ago. He went through something and was hospitalzied and people were calling his wife asking when the funeral was.
When my pastor announced it to us on yesterday he told us about the father having a heart attack. My nieces had heard that too. So I don't know. That probably won't show up in a new story though.

Tonight at prayer service our pastor shared something awesome with us. He said he was talking with a fellow pastor who is a mutual friend and he told him that last night at the prayer service they had at the church there were news cameras from all over New York. Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker all there along with many others.
Well (here's the awesome part ;D) He said that the anointing and presence of God was so heavy and thick at that service. One of the camera men disappeared leaving his camera unattended. Come to find out when they found him, he had fallen down. They initially thought maybe he got too hot, or got knocked down or something. But when they asked him (he was still on the ground) what happened, he said to them that something knocked him down and he couldn't get back up.. I think we all know what that something was don't we? I pray that God sends revival to that church.
Oh, he also told us that as of last night when talking to that mutual pastor friend that Pastor Wright does not yet know that both his wife and grandson died. So we are praying for him. That he will be strong enough to bear the news whenever he receives it. For all we know the Lord may show it to him before he's told. We just don't know. He also said that he came through surgery fine.

Family: Rev. Timothy Wright Is Responsive
MyFoxNY.com -- Gospel Singer Timothy Wright remains in critical condition on Monday after a crash that killed his wife, co-pastor Betty Wright and their 14-year-old grandson. Although he can't speak yet he is responding with nods, his family said.
The Grammy-nominated singer, known as the Godfather of Gospel was returning from a Church of God in Christ conference in Detroit when a suspected drunk-driver hit his car.
Lewisburg, Pa., resident John Pick, 44, was driving the wrong way down I-80 and slammed into the Wright car.
The Rev. Timothy Wright's adult sons spoke to reporters at the family's home on Monday afternoon. His sons said the reverend does not yet know that his wife died in the crash, but he does know that his grandson, D.J., died.
His sons, who are grieving the loss of their mother and of D.J., said they won't tell Wright that his wife has died until his condition stabilizes. He is expected to survive, although he suffered numerous broken bones.
Along with the N.Y. Fellowship Mass Choir, Timothy Wright was nominated for a Grammy award for best traditional soul gospel album for 1994's "Come Thou Almighty King." He has released more than a dozen gospel recordings, including "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," which came out last year.

REV. TIMOTHY WRIGHT UPDATE: Pastor/singer remains in stable condition; funeral plans revealed. (July 18, 2008)
Here's the latest on Rev. Timothy Wright of Brooklyn, NY. According to a spokesperson, the Gospel singer remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Rev. Wright was critically injured when a suspected drunk driver driving the wrong way smashed head-on into their car on I-80 in Pennsylvania on July 4th.
The Grammy-nominated singer, known as the Godfather of Gospel, was returning from a Church of God in Christ conference in Detroit, with his wife and grandson, when the accident occurred.
At EUR Gospel's deadline time Rev. Wright was expected to have surgery to repair a fractured jaw. He also suffered a fractured leg, ankle, ribs and neck from an automobile crash that killed his wife and grandson
A spokesperson told MyFoxNY.com that the Reverend, 61, is still unaware of his wife's death. His sons said they will inform Wright of his wife's passing when his condition improves.
Earlier last week, Wright, the founder of Grace Tabernacle Christian Center in Brooklyn, NY was responsive but could not speak due to the broken jaw and a tube in his throat. The driver of the other car also died in the crash.
An outgoing recording via the church's phone number revealed that the Rev. Wright's wife and assistant pastor, Betty, 58, and grandson, D.J., 14, will lie in state at Grace Tabernacle on Saturday, July 27. Homegoing services will be July 28 at Washington Temple, 1372 Bedford Ave in Brooklyn, NY. ==============================================
I believe Rev. Timothy Wright know his wife is dead, he just not able to talk, he can discern. He out of ICU and in stable condition, so he might be able to attend the homegoing service. I am praying for full recovery and healing from the loss. AT
