Hey Guys, Honestly I think this behavior that we have seen with AIG has been going on for decades... To be perfectly honest i think it started back in the 80's and it has just hit at all time high with greed and illegal behavior being the norm and not occasional.
The failing of AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie etc didn't just happen over night. It happened over years and years of bad behavior.
I think we are just at the point where folks are starting to get left holding the bag... For me I think the first major shock was when the ERON story broke. It was clear that these business were clearly operating without anybody looking over their shoulders...
I think the big part that the government has played is deregulation, under-regulation and in some cases lack of regulation period.
It's just that now... more common people are starting to see how we are getting ripped off....
For me... I think that the Obama team has been having it's hands tied to some degree. We have many people calling "wolf" in the guise of claiming that the more that the government tries to regulate and watch how this bailout money is spent that we are leaning towards "socialism". So I think many in government have tried to back off...
But then AIG goes and makes the ultimate case of increased regulation because clearly these people have a delusional sense of entitlement.
Right now I'm all for increased regulation... Especially with Congress because we the people do really control our government... We don't however control those companies. And let's face it... If the American people were not in such an up roar... The members of AIG wouldn't be so afraid of the waters that they are heading right now...
Trust me.... it is my opinion that Obama and congress they aren't afraid of... It's the general public. In fact I am hearing that at this point many of the workers don't want their names relaeased because they are afriad of death threats.

Let's look at this from a different perspective. A few questions/statements
1. You have a job making $500,000/year as well as a bonus which usually is around $150,000. Another company wants you and says that they can't give you $650,000/year; however, because they really want you at the job, they will pay you $450,000/year and over the next 3 years, they can give you a bonus $300,000 for the next 5 years. Would you see that as wrong?
2. And if using the same scenario, you left your other company to go to this company that was going to pay you more and now they are taxing you 90% or you can just give it all back, is that fair? What about if that money was already allocated based on the pay cut you received?
3. Who made up the rule that bonuses are based upon how a company does? Altho there are some companies that do work that way, that is not the "definite" for all conpanies
4. Can't we also say that what ppl consider middle class is "relative? There are many programs that ppl even who make over $250,000 could use help with. It has nothing to do with them haing a house that's more expensive, etc. because when you look at it based on percentages, it comes out the same.
5. It's interesting how ppl can get upset with companies that make a certain amount of money in corporate america but not much when those in sports who don't work ALL the time get paid VERY well with huge bonuses (and some of the teams aren't very good). If anything, I would say that ppl haveprejudices and/or give preferential treatment for some things/issues and not others.
I think that if you can do it and these bonuses aren't hurting anyone (which I can't say that they have besides just making ppl made that others got so much money), should this have really been something by which the gov't stepped in on? I honestly can't say yes....... but what it does do is show how much power the gov't has and about how you can see what happened in those OLD movies about the end times happening right before our eyes......truly it is a good time to be here as well as a sad time....
SN: Was it really taxpayers money? Or did they just make more money?

Good points Nikkol...yet, this was greed. We work for large companies...they get bonues..we on't..even though we are the ones making them look good. We are not getting bonues this year...because the company did not do well. Many are paid what they are worth and many people have lost money that they have invested for their own use..and for any to take tax payer and use it for bonuses..is wrong. As my asked me..whose going to bail us out?!

Nikkol, If a company can't afford you then they simply can't afford you!
Just as I think a bonuses should be given only when the over all company has made a profit. That should be regardless of the dept. I think that it is a safe assumption that a bonus is easily definited as "something extra".
If the bonus is definited as something differnt then the company still needs to accept that all is not "business as usual" and use that money toward covering the PEOPLE that have paid for INSURANCE! LOL
I think people are really upset because this "bonus" was and is still tax payers money. Thus it is coming out of our pockets...
Now compared to a sports team player things are different. They money they do or don't make has nothing to do with my bank account. It doesn't affect me at all... They only time i get pissed off is when the team owners want new stadiums and ask for the tax payers of a certain city to pay for it! Those Jerks!
By the way... considering that wall street is in the toliet... apparently a lot of people were doing their jobs...
They should quit whining over bonuses and just be glad that the American Public isn't insisting on jail time for some of those jokers...

Yes... because AIG could have went out of business if it weren't for the $185 billion bail-out of taxpayer's money... Some of the bonuses went out to ppl who nolonger work for AIG. $1 million was divided among 73 ppl and 11 nolonger with the company... and one peon received 6.3 million dollars bonus...
