I have heard it explained that to a Jewish person being fruitful and multiplying means that you have one child of each sex. You can have more than that but by having one child of each sex, you have obeyed the scriptures.

Yes we are to be fruitful and multiply thats in every area of our lives. However when you read the book of Song of Solomon which discusses sex, it is not just about procreating. Its a bout a act between a married couple which speaks of enjoyment. So it has two purposes in marriage, one to procreate as well as to enjoy one another. I don't see nothing wrong with that at all.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with using birth control.
I use birth control myself but it is all for medical reasons.

For purposes between a husband and wife that's their decision. Yet, I do not agree with taking it for medical reasons..because it can cause problems in the future. I did that for years and missed cycles after I stopped taking them..and was not sexually activate..that meant more pills to find out what I was missing months. I have found out as I have gotten that alot of it was what we eat..and don't eat. I hate spinach but, I will eat now..and others vegetables that have iron in them

I understand where you are coming from!!! I should of been a lil more spacific what my health problems are........ Well I was born with with a blood disorder and my body don't make the proper amount of estogen and progeston and I am at a very very High risk for osteoperosis so the Docter put me on hormone replacement (Birth control) pills to help regulate my hormone levels to prevent seriouse health problems in the future....plus I have Thyroid disease. So the Hormone replacement therapy is the only thing I can do so my body can funtion properly..............Plus it messes with your emotions and stuff too........

A friend asked an interesting question and I wanted to see what your view would be:
In the old testament (Gen 38:9-10), God slew Onan because he spilled his seed. Does that mean God is against contraception (birth control)?

of course not.
Onan was duty bound. It was abuse to his body, his wife, and the memory of his disceased brother, that he refused to raise a seed unto his brother.
His sin was disobedience.

That is exactly right! And I believe that birth control is an issue between GOD, husband and wife. I know couples that have never used birth control and GOD spaced the children perfectly... others have had children every 9 months.... they are using birth control now after birthing child #5!!!! ;D

Does that mean God is against contraception (birth control)? God didnt kill Onan because he spilled his seed, He killed him because he was disobedient and not keeping the covenant that he set in place when a brother dies and didnt have a son. When brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her husband's brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her. "And it shall be that the first-born whom she bears shall assume the name of his dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out from Israel. But if the man does not desire to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, 'My husband's brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.' Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. And if he persists and says, 'I do not desire to take her,' then his brother's wife shall come to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face; and she shall declare, 'Thus it is done to the man who does not build up his brother's house.' And in Israel his name shall be called, 'The house of him whose sandal is removed.'" (NASB) Deuteronomy 25:5-10

I agree with you all that Onan's sin was disobeying GOD's LAW, and not his practicing the withdrawal method of birth control.
(And his sin definitely was not masturbation either, though folks continue to (mis)use the Onan incident a lot when discussing that particular issue.)
Still, I think sis Nikkol is raising an interesting question.
Throughout scripture we find our Father opening and closing women's wombs at His will and choice. So is it possible that, in at least some sense, He intended to be and, in fact, is our "birth control"?

I understand the arguments saying that it isn't the same as "birth control".... but if one thinks about it, during "intercourse", one can't only get pregnant at the "end" of sex. (being very vague purposely). Not to mention the fact that a person can not get pregnant everytime (or anytime) they have sex. Therefore, the spilling of seed at the end, if the only issue was not getting her pregnant based on the law, would only be somewhat valid. (given our understanding of reporduction).
Side Note: I am not saying that I agree/disagree with birth control..... I actually don't really have an opinion.

why does everyone assume when you are taking birth control that you are having sex? Just like my boyfriend I told him that I was taking birth control for health reasons only and he was like. Why Birth control are you having sex? I couldn't believe he would say that. I had already told him why I was taking it and second He knows im a christian and celibant.......
