In the past few days, we've been discussing some issues that have been discussed for years. One of the things that many seem to link it to is different cultures. So there are a few questions, keeping in mind that for a majority of churches, we believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God:
1. Is the Bible divinely inspired or culturally inspired? 2. What is the determining factor of something being culture vs. something we should still follow as written? 3. Who determines if something is based on culture or not 4. Does culture change what the scripture means today?
Those are just some questions that come to mind..... look forward to a good discussion.

I personally do not believe that you need to know any hebrew or greek concerning the word, however it doesn't hurt to learn it. I believe that the Spirit of truth will bear witness to TRUTH, and when the spirit speaks...we shoud listen to Him.

Nikkol, the question, "what is the Bible" is overwhelming. It is more than I could have ever imagined. It is the key to EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING. A person could live a million years and still not know what it all means if God doesn't show him. Culture and language have nothing to do with the true and spiritual understanding of this wonderful gift that God has given to us. {joyful tears}

1. The Bible is divinely inspired. Culture has a part to play, as the writers of the Bible, although guided by the Holy Spirit, were humans, and thus were confined to their own cultures. So we get cultural elements, but that's not to say that it's an "either/or" situation. God has used culture to teach us transcendent truths. Dr. Greg Herrick has stated: Inspiration, however, is not limited to mechanical dictation (indeed, very little of it can be said to be mechanical in any way), as we might have, say, in the receiving of the Ten Commandments (or the letters to the churches in Revelation 2-3), but rather occurred in a variety of situations involving the writers as whole people (their minds, emotions, wills, etc.) in their own particular life situations (linguistic, religious, political, economic, etc.). The end product, however, was always God’s Word to man through man (2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:20-21) and carries God’s “full weight and authority.” Technically speaking, inspiration applies to the autographa (not copies or translations). 2. Good question. I usually determine this on the premises of the injunction in question. If the premises are timeless and universal, then I believe the prescriptions transcend culture. If not, I believe they are culturally binding. 3. Personally, I think this will be made evident within the text itself. 4. Here's a good answer to this, I think.
