Why should women take the last name of their husband when they get married? Are there scriptures that back this "practice"? I'm asking b/c I have a friend who refuses to take her now fiance's last name and I couldn't really give her reasons as to why she should. She's not a Christian either so that didn't help me at all in my plight to defend why you should.

It is more of an identity issue, especially if a person is involved in an established career. Well for me it was......

Spiritual perspective: At the same time, our identity is now one with our husband. Being that the man is the head of the household, the woman now takes on that name and the children as well. Additionally in scripture, the woman in many places is referred to as "the wife of".
Natural Perspective: It can cut down on questions due to different last names of the husband and wife.

Historically, it was always the man who provided for his family. The man's name carried the credit, a woman had no rights, and still in some parts of the world this is still true. In America, women were given many rights that men had in the 20's...
Therefore, it was law that a woman take on the last name as her husband. Otherwise she would not be able to purchase anything..have no society recognition.
So it was not necessarily a biblical reason, as it was for economics..and just the way things were.
That's my take on it!
