I think that a lot of times it's because we (general) have dealt with it for so long, it has become a crutch, and I would dare to say, often it has become a "friend", the one that does comfort, so to speak, but for all the wrong reasons.
Another reason why it might be so hard to deal with it once identified is because, in the process of identifying it, we have to go back, and often very far back, and revisit places that we don't want to, face people that we have long forgotten or learnt to ignore, or simply lead our own self to believe "it doesn't hurt anymore"...
However, and it's just my opinion, it is the only way to get rid of the baggage accumulated, and we have to trust that, as we do, God will do his work in us, heal and deliver.
