If the scriptures say "the unmarried careth for the Lord, how he may please him", how come marriage, waiting on marriage, what to do while you wait, etc... are the only topics one is ever asked to speak on in terms of singles workshops? (From my observations, money comes in second.)
I noticed this a few years ago. For the last 10 to 12 years, I have been teaching singles/single parents/women workshops. A few years ago I began doing something radical. It worked because I was given a little lee-way, since I'm known as know I'm a (gifted) writer, they gave me an inch when I asked "Can I choose the topic?" Boy did I take a mile!
That first year, which was like 3 years ago, my topic was "In Pursuit of the Vision" Of course this made those who were invited think " Yeah that's right, I'm pursuing my vision of the man/woman I'm gonna marry". When they arrived to my workshop they were taught a biblical workshop on pursuing either "their own vision for their life, other peoples' vision for their life, or God's vision for their life".
The next year, last year, I was asked (different state) to teach at a conference for single women 18-25. I had just finished this book "When a Woman Discovers Her Dream: Finding God's Purpose for Your Life" by Cindi McMenamin. So my workshop was built around her book, but it was advertised as a singles workshop entitled "When a Woman Discovers Her Dream" Period. So of course, once again, they thought it was all about discovering that dream man, but no, it was all about discovering God's purpose for your life. lol.
This summer once again I've been asked to teach. This time the 35+ but I am not sure yet what God wants me to cover at this conference. What's been on my heart is Health and the Single Christian. One thing I do know is that it won't be about marriage, as we have enough of those already out there.
So, again I ask, why is MARRIAGE the only topic suitable for singles workshops? Have we MADE it that way? And if you were asked to teach a singles workshop, what would the number one topic be that you'd teach on and why?
