I thought that "in light" of all the discussions going on, I wanted to know what was your view(s) regarding Jesse Jackson's comments and how do you think that will or will not play a role in this election?
Jackson's 'trash talk' a boon to Obama Sheldon Alberts, National Post Published: Friday, July 11, 2008
Rev. Jesse Jackson insists he is not a jealous man, that he is not envious Barack Obama has made it to the mountaintop of presidential politics, a summit he twice failed to reach.
But listen to his words, listen closely, and the bitterness emerges.
Jackson, a pioneer of the civil-rights movement and a trailblazer for African-American politicians, has spent the better part of two days prostrate in apology, asking forgiveness for advocating in the crudest terms the castration of the presumptive Democratic nominee.
It has been vintage Jackson -- humble, contrite, seeking redemption for his all-too-human mistakes.
"Trash talk, garbage," Jackson said yesterday, evaluating his own remarks.
Always, though, Jackson returns to same theme. Quite simply, he believes Obama is getting all the credit for the work of generations of African-American leaders, himself presumably included.
"He ran the last lap of a 54-year marathon," Jackson told CNN.
"The martyrs and murdered of yesterday make today's events possible."
That Jackson sits in pious judgment of Obama is apparent. He has accused the Illinois Senator of "acting like he's white" for failing last year to fully embrace the cause of the six black teenagers caught up in a racially charged tempest in Jena, La.
His view that Obama has "been talking down to black people" -- by urging young African-American males to take more responsibility for children they father -- reveals a fundamental disagreement over whether society or the individual bears more responsibility for the breakdown of black families.
But it's not a stretch to conclude Jackson's differences with Obama go far beyond the philosophical or ideological. Some of this, it seems, is intensely personal. Throughout the Democratic primaries -- but especially when he was courting black voters -- Obama invoked the words and memory of Martin Luther King Jr. as a source of inspiration.
To African-Americans who were initially skeptical a black man could win a presidential nomination, Obama spoke about "the fierce urgency of now," a line from King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
If Obama thought he owed any debt to Jackson, who sought the Democratic nomination in 1984 and 1988, he gave scant indication of it during the primary campaign.
When Bill Clinton compared Obama's victory in South Carolina's primary to Jackson's wins there in 1984 and 1988, the Illinois Senator's campaign treated the remark like an insult of the highest order, because it suggested he was "just" a black candidate.
How could Jackson not be offended? However diminished his stature today, he was a true force in Democratic politics in the 1980s.
He finished third in the 1984 Democratic campaign, defying expectations for an African-American candidate by winning five primaries and caucuses. In 1988, he got almost seven million votes and won 11 nominating contests.
His 1984 address at the Democratic convention was ranked the 12th greatest American speech of the 20th century in a 1999 survey, right up there with King's "I Have a Dream," John F. Kennedy's 1961 inaugural address and Franklin Roosevelt's in 1933.
Listening to Obama's speeches today, you can hear the echoes of Jackson 24 years ago.
"Our flag is red, white and blue, but our nation is a rainbow -- red, yellow, brown, black and white -- we're all precious in God's sight," Jackson told Democrats in 1984.
That widely hailed speech proved Jackson could be a unifying and inspiring figure.
But he has also long been too polarizing for Obama -- seeking to run a post-racial campaign -- to fully embrace. From his description in 1984 of New York City as "Hymietown" to his complaints about being "sick and tired" of hearing about the Holocaust, there has always been a contradiction at the heart of Jackson's activism.
"If, in my low moments, in word, deed or attitude, through some error of temper, taste or tone, I have caused anyone discomfort, created pain, or revived someone's fears, that was not my truest self," Jackson said in 1984.
"I am not a perfect servant. I am a public servant, doing my best against the odds. As I develop and serve, be patient. God is not finished with me yet."
Hearing Jackson now, still repeating his appeals for "redemption, grace, mercy," he seems almost to be parodying his 1984 speech.
There may have been a time when being on Jesse Jackson's bad side might have hurt Obama's presidential hopes. But that time is long, long past.

This is far, far, FAR from a Jeremiah Wright controversy, that's for sure.
This isn't the biggest deal here.

Jessie Jackson..is just that a trailblazer..he has made some in roads into politicas and other areas that doors had long closed to ..yet, if I maybe blunt here..he has been his own worse enemy in many instances. He chose of words or lack of have not always been in the best interest of a race of people who didn't all support his views. You can still want to be the first African American president...yet, I still it's God's plan that will prevail..

Rev. JJ has accomplished much, but he have to realize that his candle is going out and it time for someone else to take it from where he left off. I believe jealousy and envy have a lot to do with it. His own son Congressmen JJ Jr. gave him a good rebuke, I believe Rev.JJ Sr. misbehavior affect Congressman JJ Jr. future.
I also realize why he was upset with Senator BO Father Day speech, he has no or very little relationship with his ten years old daughter. He pay child support , but no real relationship. I got this information from someone who know Rev. JJ and his family and the child and her mother.
Rev. JJ comment has no affect on Sem BO .... It made him look bad and caused some, to turn their back on him.

I was wondering how could appealing to black men who have fathered children out of wedlock to step up and take responsibility for YOUR children be considered "talking down" but I forgot that Jesse Jackson is among those who fathered a child out of wedlock. Maybe the truth hurt just a little. Maybe the speech brought about some conviction in his heart. Maybe THAT'S why he uttered those ugly ignorant words under his breath. Not to mention Obama could be viewed as the "rookie" while Jessie Jackson may be seen as a "vetran" and perhaps Jesse feels Obama hasn't "paid his dues" or given Jesse Jackson his "props" who knows. Might I add, Jesse Jackson has been in politics and the public eye long enough to know that you never assume a mic is off. If anything, always assume it's ON. Still, the point is not that we heard what he said, the point is that he said it. Makes you wonder what other people say under their breath when the mic is really off, doesn't it?

You Guys....
Don't believe the hype!
That was a complete set up! Don't believe everything thing that you see!
Trust me when I say this... Jesse Jackson has been grooming Barak Obama to be president for quite sometime. He worked hard for Obama to win in Illinois when he was largerly unknown.
Trust me people... I'm from Chicago...it's not mistake that a Black man is running is coming out of Illinois... politics are not always about what you can see...
Think about this people... Why on earth would Jesse Jackson... a man that ahs been in the game for YEARS.... a man who has ther power, the faith, and the nerve to get on planes and fly all over the world... Without the back up of the United States... to get folks out of jams.... The man who got caught making comments before... such as his "hymie town" jews comment. Get caught now?
Think about it... It does Barak Obama more good to be seen as a person disliked by Jesse Jackson than a as a person that has been groomed by him...
Not to mention this... The closeness of Jesse and Barak was bound to come out as some point in time. They just staged this "incident" to throw people off track.
Yes.... Jesse has a child out of wed lock... But if you know the real deal about that then your clear that Jesse still believes in marriage and family.
He stays away for that child because the mother declared that she wanted Jesse to come to her and her child. Jesse's wife made the public statement that this child was free to come to her home... That she had even set up a room for her. But then Jesse was never to set a foot into the other woman's home again.
Apparently the other woman was/is more interested in getting Jesse under her own roof than she was letting her child have a relationship with him...
Bottom line... she was just a home wrecker trying to use a pregnancy to break up a marriage and it didn't work. No... I'm not letting Jesse off of the hook. But I'm just calling a spade a spade.
Back to the topic at hand...
In my opinion... this was a staged event to throw people off track. Obama needed to be separated from many people in chicago who will seem very controversial to the rest of the world... So they beat the media to the punch on this one by creating some stupid mess that the media was sure to eat up!
And lastly... The Jealousy issue...
Come on guys! Jesse is smart enough to know he can't be the man forever... He has been looking for a "few good men" to pass the torch on to for quite a while! I happen ti know for a fact that he has asked several people to take over his organization OPERATION PUSH in chicago... including an up and comming guy named Rev Meeks...
Also recall this... Jesse is still from the era when people that were our leaders DIED! GOT SHOT WERE MURDERED!
Obama is still very much in danger! So is his wife and two daughters...
Jesse was there when martin Luther King got killed... he knows the importance of this time...
So does Obama...
Don't believe everything you all see....

Kitty Kitty thank you for your view, there are many things I don't know about..... The mother (Rev. Jackson's daughter mother) can not keep the child from him and he don't have to come to her house. He can demand visitation. He and his wife can pick her up the child on a schedule visitation and the mother can't do anything about it. I am going to give you the blog I got some info. about the situation so you can comment like you did here. Rev. Meek.... is he from Miami? I want to know is he the same Meek I know... his mother is Carol Meek? She have been working in the community for years. The only problem I have is that they were Clinton supporters. They are not as strong as Rev. Jackson. Rev. Jackson has been in the Civil Right movement for close to fifty years. Obama has accept his apologize and made no comment about it.... so it made have been a set up to make it look like he distance himself from Rev. Jackson, Rev. Wright and the Father who know best ;D ;D ;D He doing whatever he could to get into the WhiteHouse... so far it look good.

hello AT, I don't know if Rev. Meeks is originally from Chicago... But I can ssure you that it is probably not the same Rev. Meeks that you are thinking about. This Rev. Meeks is most definitely an Obama supporter and promoted and campaigned for Obama at his church...
Meeks. church in chicago is called Salem Baptist church.... it is one of the largest and most popular churches in chicago... Like I said before guys... Obama has been under Jesse's wing for YEARS!!! At Rev. Meeks church is just one of the places where Jesse Jackson came to give an introduction speech for Obama. He let folks know that Obama had/has his stamp of approval when he was very much an unknown... Trying to get elected in Illinois... jackson was essential for that to happen. Not only that... i bet a million bucks that Jesse was also one of the people who helped Obama to decide that now was the time to run for president even through he has only been a Illinois senator for ONE TERM!!! people had to tell him to strike while the iron was hot!
Many people are under the impression that Obama came to Jesse to ask his opinion on a few things and his "permission" to run for president. Or to ask for his support....
Nope! I'm telling guys... Jesse helped to hand pick Obama! He knew that his own son was just not going to be able to make it outside of Illinois world of politics... He is seen too much as a chip off the old block. And his looking like a spitting image of Jesse doesn't help any... So for quite some time guys Jesse has been looking for guys that are indeed well educated, down to earth, clean cut, to work with... Jesse is getting old.... He knows that he's not going to be around forever.
And guys there is a picture that i saw that states a million words of Jesse and Obama. I'm going to look and see if I can find it... Take on look at it and you will know without a doubt in your heart that Obama is Jesse's heart like a son.
Cuz guys... I really want you all to grasp this... These aren't people who have some passing connection... these aren't people who maybe met 5 years ago... these are people who have probable known each other well over 10 years or more... Just like Obama has been in Rev Wright church for over 20 years!
Guys Chicago Ill is famous for underhanded politics... check out it's history... It ain't called the "Windy city" just because it's cold... LOL

Hey AT, About Jesse's daughter... if she isn't seeing Jesse, then trust me it's on the part of the mother. Some years back I saw a news show that she did when her daughter was about 2 years old. She made it a point to say that she wanted Jesse to come to visit the child in her home. She also made it clear that she had known Jesse for quite some time and he started off as her mentor. Heck she knew what she was up too... Jesse is old enough to be her father!
During the show she even showed a picture of herself in grammar school when she first met Jesse! Now again folks... I'm not letting Jesse off the hook... He's a low down dirty dog as far as being a husband is concerned. But I want you guys to be clear on what the deal is concerning this situation with this other daughter.
According to the mother... she had this child in her late 20's early 30's and claimed that she didn't think it was "possible for her to get pregnant". Which mostly likely one of the reasons that Jesse got stupid and didn't use protection. Cuz it ain't like she was the ONLY OTHER WOMAN that Jesse was sleeping around with... he probably got a little to comfortable with her because he had known her for years as well....
She even admitted that she hid her pregnancy from Jesse Jackson and for many other people. I'm not clear on when exactly she admitted that she was having his child. I think it was close to the end of her pregnancy or after the child was born. Ultimately i think she was hoping that Jesse was going to leave his wife for her...
But has Jesse himself will tell you, " It's cheaper to keep her". So that wasn't going down. Jesse is quite wealthy so he wasn't about to loose half of everything he owns for some young girl that was trying to find a way to make him choose her when she was just one of many. Plus Jesse has a LOT of kids with his first wife... I mean like 4 or 5.
AT i did check out the web site of the guy that you posted... i didn't bother to make a post on the topic... because basically i think he probably knows the real deal too... Inspite of his web site. People can be soul grapes when they can't get what they want...
This other woman also stated in the news show that she wanted Jesse to come and visit the child in her home. She then complained back then that Jesse didn't spend enough time with her. This was what caused Jesse Jackson's wife to make the public statement that the child was free to come to her and Jesse's home and the had space for her to have her own room... The child had never been...
SOoooooo..... it's looks like to me it was just a case of another woma playing games and using a child as a pawn... Cuz without a doubt I bet you guys this... I bet Jesse Jackson pays that child support without fail!
