At this time of the year - Yom Kippur - this is one of the prayers prayed over this period:
U Turns Permitted By Moshe Bogomilsky "You extend a hand to transgressors, and Your right hand is stretched forth to receive penitent."
"By emphasizing “You”, over whom are we singling out God?
God said the sinner should repent and he will be pardoned
A question was posed: What penalty is appropriate for the sinning soul?
Wisdom answered; “The sinning soul should be punished with suffering.”
Prophecy answered; “The soul who sins should be put to death.
Torah responded; “He should bring a sacrifice and he will be forgiven.”
God Himself said; “The sinner should repent and he will be pardoned”
According to the first three opinions the concept of repentance, returning to God, does not exist, and either man or animal suffers.
It is only God’s advice that the sinner should do repentance and he will be pardoned.
