Hey Guys, This is another question that I wanted to throw out to the group....
During this election and for sometime after it. I have heard the word socialism thrown around alot. I have heard Obama's plan compared to socialism.
Here is what I would like to ask... Do Christian values line up with socialism? Wouldn't we want there to be "social progams" supported by our government?
Why is socialism considered to be bad? What would the bible state about Capitalism verse socialism?
Share your thoughts guys...

Socialism? no. will be back for this part. but for now let's just say that the Word of God does not support socialism.

I think that first and foremost, we need to define some terms.
Even then, I'm not sure if biblical justification or condemnation can be found for any type of human governing system.

hope you don't mind my jumping in here...I find that there are as many definitions of socialism as there are of capitalism. For instance, pure socialism gives the state ownership of resources and the means of production.
Democratic Libertarian socialism rejects the top down control of socialism and gives control to local groups, towns, countys labour unions local health authorities etc.
Pure capitalism is ideal except that because human nature is born in sin and full of iniquity it is flawed as we have seen in the major corporations where the people at the top pay themselves first even now when the economy is in the tank.
I'm afraid that there is no black and white definition of Socialism or Capitalism, that is why the Christians role is to submit, trust God and pray, pray, pray.
This is a good conversation, lets keep it going.

Good points Kanyon.
I'm glad you pointed out the dangers of pure capitalism. One criticism I have of the Republican Party is that due to the heavy emphasis on the so-called free market, it has practically made mammon its god. And socialism, taken to its extreme, has a corrolation with secular humanism. Both extremes are really bad. Bill Maher on HBO said something interesting one time. He said we like to point out the ill effects of socialism (or what we call socialism) in European countries, but not the benefits. European countries are on the whole more socialist than the U.S., but they also have higher standards of living in some areas. I know there are always nuances and other determining factors, and I'm not advocating one form over another, but I just wanted to point that out.

hey Guys, You all have had some really good comments here... Kanyon thanks for giving us some definitions. I do want to revist this topic because now as many banks are requiring bail outs again this word of "socialism" is being thrown around every time people or the government suggest more regulation of banks to prevent the waste of tax payers money.
What exactly is the concern of socialism with the banks? Especially since they want to be bailed out? Why isn't it considered to be socialism when they are bailed out in the first place?
Someone break this down for me...
Also And Such... in an earlier post you stated that socialsm and social program aren't the same. Can you give me some examples explaining the differences?

Methinks 'Socialism' is the Republicans 'bogyman', a way of scaring the masses, yet their friends are enjoying the fruits of socialism, that is, living off of the fruits of the laborers, fruits great grandchildren will be paying off while they, the banks enjoy their bonuses.
