As some of you may know, comedian Chris Rock has a movie coming out entitled "Good Hair" which deals with Black hair care and the associated industry. He's been on a few shows, including Oprah, touting and discussing the movie. He talks about how most of the hair for weave and wigs originate in India and calls relaxers "creamy crack." Of course, we know that very little of this billion dollar industry is actually controlled by African Americans. There have been many discussions about this in the Black community, specifically as it relates to Black women feeling as though they have to adhere to a European standard of beauty by relaxing and chemically treating their hair. Anyone planning on seeing the movie? Any comments about the subject of Black hair care and the associated industry in general?

No... I am not planning to see that movie... I have better things to do, than to be degraded. I love my black hair (relaxed) and love being black...

If you haven't even seen the movie, how can you say it's degrading?

Krazeboi, I do intend to go and see the movie... Hair has always been an issue in the Black community... I think this documentary/comedy will be a good film. When does it come out?

It would be interesting to hear what is being said about this. I have to agree with AT on this one..I love being black and I love my hair..except days when I don't feel like doing it. I have found out that black women are envied by other races because of the versatility of the many they can do their hair. Straightening it for me is a way to manage..even though because of the part of the country I live in..it can cost severe damage..I find other races in the ethnic section where they sale "hair grease"..picking up a jar of Bergamot and knowing exactly what they want to buy...and it's said that African Americans see very little of the profit gained from industry..others see the profitablity of it I have wondered what we have not. We don't own the beauty supply stores, yet, we spend more for the haircare products. I ask clerks all the time how come the section for hair products are the smallest; yet, they the most..

Well, I have now gone "natural"...it really is a "breath of fresh hair". Considering dreds.... I'm about to retwist my hair.... I've even started doing that with my daughter as well.....I wish I would've gone natural earlier....
I don't tend to go to the movies anymore...too expensive. I'll wait till it comes out on netflix. Cost me only $18.01/ month. WOOHOO

Kitty, the movie is in selected cities starting today the 9th. It will go nationwide the 23rd. Nikkol, come and join the "lock nation." My hair has been locked for about 3-4 years now. I love to see a woman with well-maintained locks. My primary loctician has been growing hers for years now and they look so beautiful on her.

Kitty Ummmm.... you need to repent. CSI is THE BOMB!!!! LOL I love those shows. That was the field I would've preferred to go into....CSI/detective/etc. But alas, that was NOT the will of God for my life. I like the older shows. I just recently now understood how funny "The office" was, thanks to Netflix....and being able to watch it from my laptop....you can't beat that.

Did anyone see the Tyra show today? I had to shake my head as I watch what some people would endure for their children to have good hair. Yet, two the sadest stories were about children under 10 yrs; one little girl didn't like her hair because it wasn't straight and she preferred to wear a Hanna Montana because the color and the length. The other little got teased badly, because she had beautiful hair; they teased her so bad she has asked her mother to cut it off..repeatedly. The kicker was the 3 yr who got her hair relaxed and said it was " cute"..reasoning..she cried when her Mom combed her hair. It's amazing to me what kind of craziness people will endure. Go to her website and check out that show..

Granted, I know how it is to have to try to comb hair that's tangled... my daughter is somewhat tenderheaded and so it causes a lot of stress.... I can't imagine since I'm not tenderheaded. But now, with me just keeping my daughter's hair in twist....it's a lot more convenient and people like it.
If we had more ppl appreciative of their hair or even educating the studnets or their children, it would have less of an effect.

I relax my hair..because of where I live. My hair does not hold moisture like it used to..and I have tried many products..and living the desert doesn't help either. Nikkol..I agree with you 100% percent. My neice relaxed her little girl's when she was about 3 yrs. old. I had to keep myself from knocking some sense into her head...because she couldn't handle. I had never the child's hair until about a year ago..but, when she came to spend nights with me. I would comb her hair..and the funny thing is she's 10 now and still ask me to comb her hair.
