A Florida teacher is suing the private school that fired her for having premarital sex.

Jarretta Hamilton, a former fourth-grade teacher, appeared on the "Today" show Monday to talk about her lawsuit against Southland Christian School in St. Cloud, Fla.

Hamilton was fired in 2009 after going to school officials to ask for maternity leave. Hamilton, who is married, was asked by school officials about the date she conceived. When she explained that it was three weeks before her marriage to her husband, school officials decided to fire her. Hamilton, they argue, broke school policy to "maintain and communicate the values and purpose of [Southland Christian School]."

Hamilton is suing the school in federal court and is seeking "compensation for the loss of the job, and she's seeking compensatory damages for emotional distress," according to the Orlando Sentinal.

Recounting her story to Ann Curry, Hamilton and her husband explained that what bothered them the most was that school officials told colleagues and parents of students that Hamilton was fired for fornicating.

A letter from Southland Christian obtained by NBC News says that
"Jarretta was asked not to return because of a moral issue that was disregarded, namely fornication, sex outside of marriage."

The school asks that Hamilton drop her case and "consider the testimony of the Lord."

OK, so they aren't taking into consideration the fact that she's actually MARRYING her baby's father? That's number one. Number two, I think the school went waaaaaaaaaaayyyyy beyond its boundaries in asking about when she conceived. Now it would be one thing for her to be single and pregnant, but she's married!!! I personally think this is ridiculous and it also fails to display another side of Christian character: forgiveness.

Hey Guys,
While I do think that a Christian school should be about Christian values... This is clearly not the case... First of all I think that certain people in administration positions at the school may have already been looking for a reason to pick on her... Especially since they didn't seem to have a problem until she asked for maternity leave... It was none of their business to ask her when she conceived! But business do they have asking that type of question of a MARRIED woman in the first place! If it would have been me I woulda NEVER answered the question because it waas OUT of line!

Secondly I don't know if anyone else thinks this but for some reason I am wondering it this was more about the fact that she was a part of a interracial marriage ( her husband happens to be white...)

Lastly I think it was bad of the school to declare that she was fired due to fornication because they have no proof about the innocence of ANY OTHER person that works in their school! That was also include adultry!

Now if they said they thought she was setting a bad example for children by being a single mother...that I would have honestly understood... But this... I feel like there was malice involved...

If you notice... she is black and her husband is white, this is all white ministry. What they were probably wondering, why she was pregnant, right after they were married... I would have told them none of their business when I conceived... Another thing they sent home letters to the parents and told the student, she was fired for fornicating... what happen to privacy... The Church need to realize they can't do what they want, they have to obey the Law.. why she was fired was nobody business and it should have been kept private....

i tried to copy and paste the photo of the teacher, her husband and their baby, but for some reason i couldn't.

now i am the LAST person (or next to last, lol) to bring up race as an issue, but i wonder, in this case, could it be???
