I was sitting here listening to Church of Christ sing (they don't believe in using musical instruments). I was just wondering....can a person be part of the COC and can't sing? Listening on youtube, they have many congregational songs where it appears everyone is singing....anyone know anyone that may know that answer?

i have family down south that are members of the church of christ, as well a broadcast or two where i work who are church of christ congregations. i don't know the answer to your question, but this struck me as strange when i attended the wedding of my cousin, who is a member of the church of christ along with my aunt down south: as the brides maids started marching in, i heard music and was confused because i know they don't believe in instruments. imagine my surpise when i saw what we would call a "boom box" (lol) at the end of the isle playing their march in song. i believe it was either ribbon in the sky by stevie wonder or wait for love by luther vandross- now imo, both of these songs are beautiful wedding songs, don't get me wrong, it wasn't the song choice that confused me. what confused me was if they believe instruments are wrong, why didn't they choose accapella music for their ceremony? ?? this happened in 04 or 05, and to this day i'm still confused, because i never had enough nerve to ask outright ask my aunt or my cousin this question, lol.

LOL... That is interesting. I have just been enjoying the accapella singing on you tube....but it appears that EVERYONE sings....it is surprising that they'd use a "boom box"....maybe since it's a wedding, it doesn't follow the same "rules" as a church service.... IDK....
I did find a FB group that says "I'm part of COC and won't marry someone who can't sing" or something like that....

I remember visiting a church was called the Boston Church of Church and that service was really diffrent; I later found that it was a cult..and that they have them all over the country. Their practices and beliefs at various times were very strange..may I suggest doing a search on the internet about them..you may find your answer.

Stillfocused, I believe you're referring to the International Church of Christ (ICOC), which is different from the mainline Church of Christ denomination (I think they split from the mainline denomination). ICOC congregations are typically named after the city they are located in (Boston Church of Christ, Chicago Church of Christ, Atlanta Church of Christ, etc.) and are generally recognized as a bit cultic. Read more about them here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Churches_of_Christ

They are a cult... I have ran into a few of them... They teach that they are the ONLY ones who can be and are saved in Jesus Christ They believe that they are the ONLY true "Church" They believe you can only be saved through water baptism by a COC ministered. They don't believe in the Gifts of the Holy Spirit They teach that prophecies in the book of Revelation are not future, but past tense They reject the doctrine concerning "The Rapture of The Church They FORBID worship of the Lord with any kind of instrumental music They reject the idea that they are a "Denomination" www.reveal.org/library/activism/srausch-warning.htmlwww.biblebelievers.com/david_martin/martin_church-christ.html

Well, I wasn't really wanting to talk about them insofar as their views....and truth be told, I can find other churches that hold on to at least one (or more) of those same things on that list.

AT, as I have stated, it is the INTERNATIONAL Church of Christ that is largely regarded as a cult. They are different from the mainline Church of Christ. I don't think either reformation uses music in their worship.

Although I have to admit listening to the "backgrounds", they have someone that sounds like drums and a bass person that sounds like a guitar.

AT, as I have stated, it is the INTERNATIONAL Church of Christ that is largely regarded as a cult. They are different from the mainline Church of Christ. I don't think either reformation uses music in their worship. I have ran into a few people from Church of Christ... They are very aggressive... They believe no one is saved outside COC. You onlt can be saved through water baptism in their church. They don't believe in the Rapture or the Great Tribulation or any of the end-time prophecies. I rather deal with the JW than the COC... I had the tell those ppl to go and saved somebody else and leave me alone... that was before I knew they was a cult. They wasn't the ICOC... they were COC... Their were two individual that approach me at different time. They get really mad when you reject going to church with them.... I told one man that I don't visit churches when my church have service, and let me know when you have a special service or revival. He got upset because I wouldn't go to his church on Sunday morning and he say is trying to save my soul... I told him I am saved, but he insisted that I wasn't... He feel I should come to his church to get saved by being baptized in water by his pastor... I had the same experience by a young lady on an college campus. I was about to call security on her, she will not leave me alone and kept on following me telling she trying to save me... I said save somebody esle! I came close to knocking her out! Some ppl told me not to listen to her and get away from her, right in her face. And they don't believe in Spiritual Gifts and the Holy Spirit.
