On a cool autumn night in Chicago the first African-American president emerged in Grant Park. That night was the start of a new beginning, one that held promises of a better future for the young people that were inspired by him to vote and volunteer.

In a book entitled Obama Zombies: How the Liberal Machine Brainwashed my Generation, author Jason Mattera explains how young people got caught up in Obama mania or were on an Obama high when they voted for him. The basic point of the book is that the young people that came out to vote for Obama were fooled into doing so and that they did not really understand the man's politics or who he really was. There may be some valid points to this claim.

It can be said that to some degree people were caught up in the excitement of the Obama campaign. There was a sense that supporting him was the "in" thing to do. Famous people were making inspiring and dramatic videos based on his speeches and every young person on a college campus seemed to love him. Chicago supported him as he was our hometown guy.

The fact that this happened is not due to some brainwashing or ignorance. Americans believed in this man's message, that we can make this country a better one to live in. The problem is that we expected him to do it on his own with out our help. If you believe in this President , or are starting not to, you need to remember one thing Obama repeatedly told his supporters, "I need your help".

The frustrations over the war in Afghanistan, healthcare reform, and the economy have worn on people. When Obama took office every challenge and problem was supposed to be suddenly solved. Unfortunately, these problems are growing in complexity.

We need to realize the changes that have taken place. Health care reform is a BFD! When social security first passed in this country it was not the huge program it is today. It started small and has grown into the program we are familiar with today. The recent health care reform legislation is only a seed that will grow into something better.

The problem for Obama is that people seem to be growing impatient with him. This impatience, or frustration rather, is coming towards Obama from both sides. It come from those that feel change is not coming fast enough or is perhaps not the change they had envisioned. It is also coming from those who simply do not want things to change at all.

Here is another problem for Obama, change is hard to accept and those that do not like what he is doing are making their voices more heard than those who like what he is doing.

Those that support what the President is doing need to be more vocal. It seems that these people are unconfident in voicing their support of him. Change is not easy, it has to be fought for and it is a struggle. It will come slowly and perhaps painfully.

If this country decides to abandon Obama and his mission, the alternative seems scary. The republican party seems to not have real leadership, asides from Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin. They are also a party with no vision or plan asides from drilling from more oil and cutting taxes. This party seems to not have any courage.

Obama may not be perfect and we may not agree with everything he does, but he does have the courage and leadership to be an agent of change. We should not give up on him nor give up on that shared vision.
