The Salute to Greatness dinner Saturday night will have a special glow.
Martin Luther King III, the eldest son of revered civil rights leader — Martin Luther King Jr., will announce that he has been married for nearly two years to longtime girlfriend Arndrea Waters.
And better yet, that the couple is expecting a daughter in late spring.
The Salute to Greatness dinner is an annual awards event that serves as the major fund-raiser for the Martin Luther King Jr. Center on Auburn Avenue. Coretta Scott King, widow of the civil rights leader, made her last public appearance at the dinner two years ago, only three weeks before she passed away from cancer.
The eldest child of the Kings — Yolanda King — suddenly passed away last May of an apparent heart attack in California.
"In light of the devastating losses that our family has suffered with the passing of Aunt Coretta and Yolanda, this is great news that a grand-child of Martin Luther King is coming into the world," said Isaac Farris Jr., president and CEO of the King Center who is a first cousin of the King children. "Our legacy continues."
King III married Waters shortly after his mother's passing, but the couple decided to keep the marriage private until now.
King III is the first of Martin Luther King Jr.'s four children to get married, and he will be the first sibling to have a child.
The announcement of both the marriage and the child actually will occur during the awards dinner at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. Farris also promised that dinner guests will be treated to a special surprise when King III unveils the news.
King III was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment. Waters works for the Center for Democratic Renewal in Atlanta.
The publicist for the event, Kent Matlock, also confirmed both the marriage and the pregnancy in a phone call Friday.
After the dinner, the couple will host an "After Glow" reception starting at 10 p.m. in the hotel's international ballroom, which will include a champagne toast, cake cutting and bouquet toss.
As Farris said: "This is a happy occasion."
This year's "Salute to Greatness" Awards honorees include retired Atlanta Life Insurance Company chairman and CEO Jesse Hill Jr. and corporate recipient Delta Airlines. The annual dinner recognizes excellence in leadership that demonstrates a commitment to social responsibility in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
