I believe that if we have an intimate relationship with the Lord then He does direct our paths. Dating means differnt things to different people. I personally refuse to date untill i wake up one day desiring marriage and then when i am ready my faithful Jesus will cause the man to come from wherever He is. That is how i think be it whether i need finances, a horse or a man lol.
In my experience dating can lead to unexpected expectations. As a growing christian i saw nothing wrong if a man who wanted to get married invited me out for a meal or to the theatre. Even though i did not want a relationship and made it clear to a person who is really waiting on God that sent out mixed signals leaving a wake of people who i was 'bruising' along the way.
I know a lot of christian men who have done this-they take a woman out, spend time talking to her etc only to go off and marry someone else later saying they never made any promise but many times those women even though it may not have developed into a full on relationship still formed attachments.
To me my heart is precious like the bible says and out of it flows the issues of life and we must guard it with all dilligence. To me the admonishing to treat all men like brothers including hanging out with them has now been relegaded to men who are in the same position as me and do not want marriage but whose company we can mutually enjoy in the lord.
Ladies dont be no lucky scratch for nobody. Btw i have heard it said that a real man knows his wife when he first meets her=i have been told this by both unbelievers and spirit filled men. That to me says a lot. selah
