Hi everyone:
I have a question that I would like to ask:
We were talking the other day and it was brought up that in Black churches we view our Pastors as Leaders but in White churches the Pastors are viewed as Servants............
Which got me to thinking what is the role of a Pastor is he (general) a Leader or a Servant?
What do you all think?

I think all of God's children are servants. EDITED TO ADD: Should be considered servants. I edited my original statement because there are some who do not consider themselves "servants" because they are "beyond" that. (and I don't even like that particular smilie but felt it was appropriate)

All leaders are servant..... Most of us not comfortable with the Word Servant, because of slavery..... If we can come into reality that we nolonger slave servant or bond servant, but free servant for Christ, we will embrace the ministry of servanthood. You can not properly lead, without serving.

Amen Krazeeboi... all are servants... Pastors are servant-leaders... Although I've never heard this discussed as a distinction between black & white churches... I would love to see this statistical survey that states black churches do A and white churches do B... what happens with predominately black churches with white Pastors and vice versa?? No offense, I just think alot of this stuff is for conversation purposes and for those (general) that like to continue to bring white and black issues into everything... I am NOT speaking about anyone on this board... just want to know when it is going to finally be enough...

I can't say there are statistic but I can say that the majority of the "black leaders" are preachers, from Rev. Martin Luther King, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, the leaders of Operation PUSH are mainly "Reverend" and the Min Louis Farrakhan just to name a few. In the context of our conversation, that is basically what we were speaking of, and as a result attention was brought to the forefront that "white churches" do not regard their Pastors as civil and political leaders whereas we in the "black" church regard our Pastors as leaders........and in that respect it is true... you may not agree but it is true... African American "Pastors" will run for political office, where one very seldom sees the pastor of an all white congregation, trying to promote his /her agenda as a leader for the people.... I found this very interesting and wondered why is it that way........and in our churches what is the role of a Pastor?

If you had posed the original question like that, I would have understood better what you were referring to... Thanks for clarifying that... The reason why we see that is not just because of political aspirations, but most were part of the Civil Rights movement which made them become "leaders" of sorts... I don't think, had this not happened, we (general) would address them as so.

I look at this way. God doesn't create leaders he creates servants and they develop into leaders. In order to really understand what it maens to lead in my opinion one must be a servant first. Jesus said the greatest inthe kingdom was a servant. Jesus was a servant leader i believer pastors should be seen inthe same capacity as servant leaders.
