What made me begin to tip the appropriate amounts was when I learned that in most places -the pay scale is lower due to tips they expect to receive. ASWSOW, your attitude is to be commended because the hourly pay for a waiter is about 2.00+ an hour because they are expected to make tips in addition to their salaries.
That is bogus. Anybody who works for $2.00 an hour in this day and age outta be shot (sorry)..especially if you are trying to make a living. First, waiters MUST be paid at the State minium hourly wage. Name one state who's state hourly minimum wage is 2.00 an hr? Nevada has one of the lowest minimun wage and it's at $5.15 an hour. Secondly, $2.00 an hour? Thirdly, $ 2.00 an hour? Fourthly, $2.00 an hour? Fifthly, $2.00 an hour?

I wish that it was not so, but I have worked in hotels for years and true to form blacks disappoint me in tipping and travel etiquette all together among blacks is just poor.
You will have a family of 10 trying to squeeze in hotel room, requesting towels, soap, cots, sheets, pillows, etc and they want tip the housekeepers and then complain that the room is to small......Again, don't let a church convention come to town where the travelers are not seasoned it's just
I will say with the more professional (corporate) conventions example/ IBM, Microsoft, Raytheon, etc the blacks with those organizations tip....
but if it is an all black conference like Delta Sigma Theta, Kappas or Black Data Processors very little tipping, and if it's the National Church of Missionary Baptist Good Night NO TIPS................
Me, personally I tip the gas station attendant, my hairdresser, the nail tech, any one in the service industry can expect a tip from me.. I am in the service industy, If i send you a letter about parking in your driveway, or painting your house will you tip me also?

This is so racist and so boring its crazy... can't we find something else to discuss... Blacks don't tip, whites don't tip... asians don't tip... black people, don't trip... it's not that serious... lack of training.. who knows, maybe it's poor service or some people don't know... let's not paint a broad stroke on this... we have several blacks on this board that do tip... let's not start a race war over this issue.... ;D We're not starting a "race war" or anything; the vast majority that posts on this board is Black anyway. ;D I'm not interested in labels here ("this is racist," "this is stupid," etc.), only the truth. Our people need to be educated on this issue (as well as others), as many people will tell you that they observe a marked difference between races here. The problem won't go away by us simply burying our heads in the sand or refusing to discuss it. I simply wanted to get various opinions here on the subject.

If you send me a letter about parking my car why would I tip you, there is no service provided? If you paint my house in hot sun everyday, yes I will tip you..... What are you getting at? ?

Jas, Don't know about you and the labor laws in Nevada but when I worked in hotels (across the country) wait staff was paid about 2.25 an hour because they were included in a tip pool.... and if the worked in the restaurant they could make tips.........which were considered part of their salary....... If you look at the pay stub of a waiter they are tipped out on their paychecks from the gratuity that was left by customers..... not including cash tips..... An argument can be made that anyone who accepts a job at $5.15 an hour out to be shot (especially without the options of making tips) if they are trying to make a living in this day in age.......... True story one of the bellman in my hotel who makes about $6.00 an hour, own a Cessna (Jet Airplane), pays $1200.00 a month in child support for one child all because of the tips he makes at the hotel. Granted one could say the hotel should pay him $100,000 a year, but they don't because he is considered part of the tip pool........ Then again, things may have changed since I stopped working..

Most server jobs don't pay the minimum wage. Most pay $2.15 a hour, because you receive tips. Teh law exempts the restuarant from having to pay the minium wage because the tip is supposed to bring them up to the minimum. I was a server and at one point in my life I was a bar tender. This was in the state of Missouri. The bar tenders at most places don't even make minimum although they tend to get paid more than the server. At the time I was making 4.15 a hour plus tips.
Actually you would be surprised that a lot of servers especially in the high end restuarnts make very good money. I had friends in th service industry that worked in upsacle places that were making over 40,000.

Even with nevada's rate being at 5.15, employers do exceed this amount. I made $4.75, 10 years ago working at a movie theater. It would be crime to make that same amount 10 years later.

Operative word here is union alot of your common restuarants don't have a union. I worked for appleBee's international no union. my sisters worked for Red lobster no union. the hotel industry is a little different because they do have a union.
That tipping out is not cool especially if you didn't do well that particular night. Every little bit helps, so i try to tip. People see tipping differently, but most people change their opinion once they have worked in that capacity.

Applebee's starting pay is $6.75 plus tips. The tips are shared between the waiter/bus person. Applebee's, Ihops and whatever else are not apart of union.
Also on the Hilton pay scale, a person who is in the union will make $12.75, a person who is not in the union will make around $10.00.
again, everybody here tips! And the only time a person will not tip is if you offer extremely BAD service. Whether you got $2.00 or $8.00..be glad you got something, because "nothing" is always an option, as tipping is not a requirement.
LANL, You said you will tip anybody in the service industry. I am in the service industry.

People may not be able afford to tip after they purchase the meal..for some it maybe the only time they go out for dinner because it maybe too hot to cook or etc. And as far as those attending church conferences and other related functions..let's be honest..they don't have any money left to leave a tip. They had to buy a plane, bus, or a train ticket or some they rented a car, brought 2-3 new outfits, got their hair and nails done, brought new shoes, and for some a new Bible, rented a motel room, gave in almost every offering that was given, ate lunch at whatever fast food restaurant was convenient, and gave in almost every offering that was take..after all of that some people are really blessed if they have 10.00 left over when they left home with 500.00. And this isn't really a race issue...it's a money issue..or should I say the lack of....

Stillfocused stated:
This has nothing to do with the how much money a person has. For some its plain ole ignorance. Some people just don't know better. others its just being cheap. I feel if a service is rendered and if the service is good, give the person a tip. If you can spend all that to look good the least you could do is tip the people that are serving you and handling your food.
Jasmine stated:
I talked with a friend who works at applebee's in St. louis, right now and they are paying $2.13 a hour plus tips. Now applebee's franchise may pay more, but the ones which are under certain territories and are corporate only pay $2.13. Now a Hostess may make more or a bar back but not servers. Maybe in Nevada its different. even here in NJ its $2.13 as well.
