A recent Black event was held right up the road from where I am in Charlotte, NC (CIAA tournament). Here is a blogger associated with the local newspaper, The Charlotte Observer, who describes a subject that's not too often talked about in the Black community. So what's up with Black folks and tipping, or the lack thereof?

Well Well Well, this is a sad stereotype that black people have on them but unfortunately it is TRUE.......... Me personally working in hotels, where I bring in the Conventions and I will tell you that not only do blacks not tip but BLACK CHURCH Conventions are the WORSE. Not only do we under tip or don't tip at all we are so demanding, we want xtra sugar for the tea, xtra bread, xtra butter, xtra salad dressing and xtra everything..... We put enough sugar in tea to put the sugar cane factory out of business..... People you are out to dinner not at home (use a sweetener substitute) We run the poor people wait staff to death. I was at the COGIC National Convention one year and I saw an entire Wait staff just walk out and left the restaurant packed with people and no one to serve them ;D ;D I think it is an OVERALL lack of teaching in regards to etiquette in the homes.

People don't tip. Its not just isolated to one nationality or group of people. I have worked in the restuarant business and whites, black, asians whoever i found that people didn't tip. I usually tip 15 - 20%. If the service is poor then I will tip only 10%. Let kill this stereotype that Black folks don't tip, its better to say some black folks don't tip. just like i found that some white folks don't tip. The biggest thing i saw was that a ot of well off people don't tip.

If you read the comments on the blog, a majority of those who have worked in the retail/hotel industry say that it's true that you have folks from all races who don't tip, but that Blacks disproportionately don't tip. Frankly, I'm not surprised. If it's the truth, it's the truth, and we need to own up to it.
Now I usually don't tip when I call in an order and go to pick it up. My reasoning is because since there really is no "service" involved, I don't have to tip. Is that appropriate?

I like how one individual said it..I tip according to service: Bad service =No tip, Good Service=Great tip.
This is what I lookout for:
1. Was I approached by a waiter who has an attitude. 2. Did they make it a point to come by my table to see if I need a refill on my drink.. 3. Did they ask me if I was pleased with my meal, or was everything ok 4. Did I detect tone, when I ask for assistance 5. Did i have to seek and search to get some assistance.
These things will get you a "no tip" in a heartbeat.
Also, tipping is not an obligation. The waiter is PAID to wait. A bartender is Paid to tend. Gratuity means I appreciate you for your excellent/great service.
If you are not performing excellent or great service then you should not expect a "thank you".

What made me begin to tip the appropriate amounts was when I learned that in most places -the pay scale is lower due to tips they expect to receive.

ASWSOW, your attitude is to be commended because the hourly pay for a waiter is about 2.00+ an hour because they are expected to make tips in addition to their salaries. I wish that it was not so, but I have worked in hotels for years and true to form blacks disappoint me in tipping and travel etiquette all together among blacks is just poor.
You will have a family of 10 trying to squeeze in hotel room, requesting towels, soap, cots, sheets, pillows, etc and they want tip the housekeepers and then complain that the room is to small......Again, don't let a church convention come to town where the travelers are not seasoned it's just
I will say with the more professional (corporate) conventions example/ IBM, Microsoft, Raytheon, etc the blacks with those organizations tip....
but if it is an all black conference like Delta Sigma Theta, Kappas or Black Data Processors very little tipping, and if it's the National Church of Missionary Baptist Good Night NO TIPS................
Me, personally I tip the gas station attendant, my hairdresser, the nail tech, any one in the service industry can expect a tip from me..

This is so racist and so boring its crazy... can't we find something else to discuss... Blacks don't tip, whites don't tip... asians don't tip... black people, don't trip... it's not that serious... lack of training.. who knows, maybe it's poor service or some people don't know... let's not paint a broad stroke on this... we have several blacks on this board that do tip... let's not start a race war over this issue.... ;D If I had to pay upwards of $180 per night for a room then I would have June Bug and all of dem stay in my room!!!! ;D I guess most of us honest folks never put more than one person in a room and asked for an extra towel or blanket...

BTW: the maximum in a hotel room is 4 persons so any honest person can have 3 other people in a room with them
