I wonder what believers did to celebrate the birth of Christ before church buildings were erected and a day was appointed to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Well, if December 25th fell on the day by which a ministry had church, they went to church. It would be a church day just like Saturday Jan. 14 or Sunday Jan 15 (depending on what day your ministry has service). ASWSOY: ok BTW: We had an awesome time in service on Sunday. Another church that we fellowship with came and spent Christmas service with us (they have evening services only) we had a good time.

Nikkol, thanks for responding. Let me rephrase the question..Before the creation of the calendar that we use and churches were not built, during the time after his death and the time time disciples were spreading the gospel...was the birth of Christ celebrated ? Keep in mind that the Jewish calendar is very from the calendar we use.

We have no record of the earliest Christians celebrating the birth of Christ that I'm aware of.

Happy Birthday to me! :-D
Well, I just dropped in to say that we had service on Christmas Day. There was NO issue or discussion whether or not we would. Christmas is about Christ, not family or friends or gifts. People need to hear a word from God no matter what day it is. We normally have a Christmas Eve Candle Light service from 11 pm to 12 am but this year we did not. We normally have Sunday morning 730 am, 930 Sunday school and then 11 am worship but on Christmas we just had Sunday School from 9 - 10 and Sunday worship beginning at 10. I tell you. WE HAD CHURCH. The way we always have church. My pastor didn't preach no Christmas message. He went to the first chapter of Luke but he did not give us a Christmas story message. He gave us a word from the Lord. Deliverance was breaking out all over the house. I wouldn't have had it any other way. Not only that but our church was full to the balcony. People WANT to have church. There are people who come to our church all the time because their churches are closed on Sunday evenings or during the week. Churches that will Close on Christmas are probably closed many other Sunday's during the year. To them, Christmas is just another Sunday or just another day. And that's sad.
This week we will still have our New Year's Eve service and we will have the same schedule on Sunday Morning as Christmas Day. And I can tell you now, both services will be full.
I read earlier where someone stated that because of the size of their congregation they will join with another church. I think that's great. It's good for fellowship and it opens the door of the church for those who want to worship. That's better than just closing the doors.
A sister at my church said last week that she was very offended when she heard a commentator on television ask very sarcasitically, "If Christmas is all about Christ then why are so many churches closed on Christmas?" I honestly don't know why she was offended. I think it's a darn good question! You can't even spell Christmas without Christ. People use the excuse that they want people to spend time with their families. I'm reminded of the scripture where the people came and told Jesus that his mother and brothers were outside desiring to speak with him. His response was, "Who is my mother and who are my bretheren? Those who do the will of my father, the same are my mother and sister and brother".
The world is throwing bones at the church and we are grabbing them up and swallowing them so fast that we don't realize that we will eventually choke on them. It's like the devil is testing us to see how much we will just give up withouth him having to fight us for it. He makes a suggestion and we take it and run with it. The church is really being lulled to sleep and we don't even realize it. Much advantage can be taken of a person who is sound asleep.

Isn't Christmas a pagan holiday anyway?
Maybe a new thread needed.

Nikkol, Yes it was my birthday Tuesday.
ASWSOY: If Christmas is a pagan holiday that's all the more reason why churches should remain open.
