The reason is because the Europeans who came here had a feudal land holding system, which included private ownership. That wasn't really known to the indigenous peoples. So the Europeans got to the New World, asked "Who does this land belong to?" The native peoples were like, "What?" The concept was virtually unknown to them. So the Europeans felt as though they had a right to it. But I suspect that even if there was a system of private land ownership in place among the indigenous peoples before the Europeans' arrival, they would have taken it anyway and justified it.

But I suspect that even if there was a system of private land ownership in place among the indigenous peoples before the Europeans' arrival, they would have taken it anyway and justified it. That is the point. The Doctrine of discovery justifies all the land grabbing on this continent and others. The doctrine of discovery also justifies the occupiers actions with regard to the slave trade. The only thing this revelation can do for me other than forgiving those who did this stuff to all of us and lobby the UNN and the major church groups world wide to repudiate this doctrine. Then I see us educating those around us and showing how even current behavior is influenced by this doctrine. This 'doctrine' stated that the lack of the instruments of civilization by the 'discovered' justified their actions. How could anyone hold them accountable for their actions when they were merely discovering land and assets in 'unoccupied' land. If Christian discoverers can be made to see the error of this doctrine, which I doubt maybe we can see a national repentance.

Actually, most times I think the reasons were religious in nature, which is why Europeans came to the New World in the beginning.
