BET celebrates its 25th anniversary today. Do you watch BET? Do you think it's done good for the Black community over the past quarter century?

BET celebrates its 25th anniversary today. Do you watch BET? Once in a blue. Maybe once every 3 months or so when I am bored I will catch an episode of "Girlfriends" or something like that. I haven't noticed where they have made such a big difference but then again, what do I know? I don't watch or follow their happenings.

If a person from another country used BET to gauge black folks, he would have a very messed view of us.
The influence that network has on our children is unbelievably negative, to say the least. I know, its a shame that a network can even influence a generation that way. As a matter of fact with BET being 25 today, there's now a generation that hasn't lived without the exploitative images of us.

Problem is that its about ENTERTAINMENT. Instead of INFORMATION. BET to me is nothing more that a 24-7 Music/Comedy Channel with some chu-ch sprinkled in during the morning and on Sundays. Sing Dance and Play sports Negroes but dont become informed or knowledgeable.. Degrade your women, strengthen your ignorance, weaken your mind, destroy your spirit man. woooooooooooooo 25 years... The Ultimate Hustler Whats next the Ultimate Pimp or the Ultimate Hooker ? BET had the potential to be something great instead it has become something quite mediocre.

I agree, Giants. That makes me wonder what's the better situation: 1) that our faces are not on television at all OR 2) that our faces are on television shucking, jiving, exploiting and disrespecting.
Is the most important thing that we're represented no matter what the image that's portrayed?

It also must be pinpointed that media giant, Viacom, is in control of BET since it was sold for $3 billion in 2000. Viacom also owns MTV and VH1. This mean these media giants (there's about 10 of them) control the output of media. BET used to have good news shows, political debate shows, and teen talk shows but under Viacom, alot of that has been cut. A flimsy portrayal of black culture is being propagated through this channel. It's more intentional than spontaneous if you ask me.

Yes, things got even worse when Viacom purchased BET, but the network was already on that perverted slope before Viacom even came into the picture. We've got good ole' black folks at BET to thank for shows like BET Uncut which features videos that are as close to porn as they come. Even without huge corporate buyouts, we do a wonderful job of exploiting our own, all on our own. Ultimately, the race has to shoulder the responsibility for what's presented to our masses or audiences that view that network. BET has a responsibility and unfortunately, right now the only thing that drives the programming is green, not black.
