Baptism was an important part of the early church's practice and teaching. In His discourse with Nicodemas, Jesus revealed that baptism was essential( John 3:5)
Furthermore, Jesus proclaimed, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be d**ned".(Mark16:16)
Both Matthew and Luke recorded more specific directions. Matthew stated that Jesus told His disciples to baptize "in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the HolyGhost".Mathew 28:19. Luke revealed Jesus directions to preach remission of sins through His name: " ANd that repentance and remissions of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem".(Luke24:47)
The apostles first fulfilled these commands after the Holy Ghost fell on the Day of Pentecost. In answere to the Jewa question, Peter stood with the other eleven and preached Jesus Christ crucified. When their hearts where pricked with conviction, he declared to them what actions to take to fulfill God's plan of salvation(Acts2:38)
This wonderful plan involves repentance and remissions of sins through baptism in water in the name of Jesus Christ. Thus , Peter fulfilled Jesus command.
Later, when the angel visited Cornelius, Peter was again instrumental in preaching remission of sins through the name of Jesus in baptism(Acts10:43, 48)
Paul preached this same message in Epheses by instructin some disciples of John the baptist that John pointed the way to Jesus" John verily baptised with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him with should come after him, tht is, on Christ Jesus. (Acts 19:4-5)
From theses examples it is clear that the early church baptized in the name of Jesus in obediance to Jesus' own command.
