Was this old prophet a prophet of the Lord?
How could God give the old prophet a word after he lied to the young prophet?
Prophets must speak truth but in this regard, what is the case of the "old prophet"?

YES, he was a prophet, but with issues.... if you notice, he didn't say, "the Lord told me to tell you", he said an angel told him. He was jealous of this prophet, because God did not used him or one his sons of the prophets (this were the school of prophet, Elijah & Elisha both had the sons of prophets). The old prophet was seasoned, who had a group prophets under him, that why the young prophet honored and respected false word. After the young prophet disobey God's instruction, the old prophet brought forth the Word of the Lord of judgment toward the young man.

With all due respect, sis AT, I think there's a whole lot of "reading into" going on in that response. Now, don't get me wrong, 'cause as most folks here know, when it comes to the scriptures, I'm all for a good ole-don't feel no ways tired-Holy Spirit leading us into ALL Truth "dig-down". So, at this point, I am not, in any way, saying or even implying that what you've said is not so. But I do think that in the search for answers to bible questions like "Guest" is asking, no matter how deep we may indeed be going, a safe and sound "excavation" always at least begins with, and proceeds from the firm foundation of what the scriptures actually state. For example, in simply reading the chapter, did anyone notice that all throughout 1Kings 13, the writer/translator seems to repeatedly make some very clear, consistent, specific and, perhaps, very telling distinctions in and by his different uses of the terms "man of God" and "prophet"? Check it out, it's quite interesting... at least to me.

Keita..interesting point in noticing the use of Man of God and prpphet.
The old man was a prophet..yet, I don't believe the old man lied to the young man. I believe that the older was used to test the obedience of the young man. The young man was given the instruction not to eat or drink in that place and neither was he to return the way he came. The young man made error in judgment when trusted in the word "spoken" by an angel of the Lord and not the word of the Lord that had been spoken to him.

According to oldest commentaries, this is the interpretation of some of the verses:
1 Kings 13 (King Jeroboam)
11. And an elderly prophet was sojourning in Beth El, and his son came to him and related to him all the deed that the man of God had performed that day in Beth El, and the words that he had spoken to the king; they related them to their father.
And an elderly prophet: a false prophet.
sojourning in Beth-El: He was not from there but from Samaria. So it is stated in the section dealing with Josiah (II Kings 23:18). And they saved his bones with the bones of the prophet who had come from Samaria.
30. He placed the corpse in his grave and they eulogized him, "Alas my brother!"
in his grave: [i.e.,] in the graveyard belonging to the false prophet in the city.
32. For the thing that he called out by the word of the Lord, will come to be about the altar that is in Beth El; as about all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria.
For the thing… will come to be: [i.e., the prophecy mentioned above in v. 2] and human bones they will burn upon you. Perhaps his bones will rescue my bones.
2 Kings 23 (King Josiah)
16. And Josiah turned and saw the graves that were there on the mount, and he sent and took the bones out of the graves and burned them on the altar and defiled it, according to the word of the Lord that the man of God had called, who had called out these words.
17. And he said, "What is this marker that I see?" And the people of the city said to him, "The grave of the man of God who came from Judah and called out these things that you did on the altar of Bethel."
“What is this marker?”: He saw a grave, one side of which was overgrown with thorns and thistles, and whose other side was [graced with] myrtles and spices. He wondered about it and said, “What is this?” And they replied,…
The grave of the man of God.. and the false prophet, who commanded his sons that they bury him next to him.
18. And he said, "Let him be. Let no one move his bones. " And they spared his bones with the bones of the prophet who came from Samaria.

this is an good question to ask... this what I got out of it....
First I going to say this.. there are false prophets, lying prophets, etc..etc.. that were in the bible and in the year of 2006 they are still on the rampage....
the Young Prophet said the word of the Lord told him what not to do.. and I beleive he knew voice of the Lord... But what twisted him up.. when the man said that he was an prophet just like he was.. so he figured well he couldn't be lying..
Just take a look in our churches at some people
What did the bible said Galation 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed
God doesn't contridict his self, and he's not here to confused anyone. God speak direct and to the point...
It's true God will use that same mouth that lied and bring out judgement.. ..etc..etc..
after that I believe that young prophet knew that he made an error listening to the prophet
