Okay you music lovers, I have a "weird" question....
Preparing for work this morning, I began to think about this though I don't know why:
Why is it that when a black artist comes out with a song/cd it is labeled: Gospel? However, if a caucasion comes out with a song/cd it is called Contemporary Christian?
What am I missing, can someone break it down for me? I will be honest, I prefer to listen to "Contemporary Christian" or "Praise & Worship", I cannot always relate to Gospel artists - I feel that the other is more pure (at least that is how it is for me).

Gospel is a type of music, a genre. So gospel is known as a mixture of "jazz & blues". I don't believe that the terminology was even used before Thomas Dorsey and his music was not even allowed in many churches. Nowadays, his music would be considered "old school".
With caucasian (or any other nationality), their music is moreso part of their culture. What I mean is that they don't have a "separate" type of genre specifically for just the church setting.
However, because such a "distinction" has been made between church music and world music (not based on words but based on chord progression) this may be why one may seem more pure.

I can't break it down but I feel ya Sis! IMO Gospel music plays on peoples emotions and many time aren't scripture based at all.... Contemporary Christian music exalts Jesus more and are usually based on the Word of God which breaks bounds and set people free..... There is a song out that my mother loves by Mary Mary (Yesterday) and I just don't for the life of me understand that song. This is just my opinion for you all who get deliverance from that song TGBTG! But as for me I personally don't understand that song except that it sounds like a good southern traditional Gospel song that plays on people emotins....

It has everything to do with th style of the song, how the artist sings it, and the type of music that goes along with it. I listen to it all and I love both...

Bro. Beck, Do you find that one seems to be more..............ummmm, the only word that I can think of is "pure", than the other? ahh! That would depend on what you classify as contemporary and Gospel... What they label some stuff today as gospel... I dont..lol and some stuff as contemporary I dont... They consider the neo soul gospel music stuff as "contemporary"... but I personally think its junk.. give me some Donnie, and some old commissioned,Fred, Hez, Darryl Coley and Im alright..

Am I making sense?

I can't listen to those people anymore, either and believe me I grew up on all those folks..... The only traditional gospel artists that I can still listen too and get something out of it is the Hawkins, and it may just be preferences... but honestly some of these songs don't make sense to me......some of Darryl Coley songs really don't make sense to me.

I love this song from Daryl.. Verse 1: To live is Christ and to die is gain. To suffer with Him, I know that I shall reign in His arms, over there, in that land bright and fair; to live is Christ and to die is gain. Verse 2: To suffer with Him and to feel His pain, to carry my cross, is the reason why He came. Just to save my soul and to make me whole; to live is Christ and to die is gain. Bridge 1: To gain my peace, from the storms that tear my heart into pieces, little bitty pieces, where no love can dwell there. To gain my robe and to gain my crown, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Bridge 2: To gain my peace, from the storms that tear my heart into pieces, little bitty pieces, where no love can dwell there. Ending: To gain my robe and to gain my crown, to suffer is Christ, to go through is Christ, to live is Christ and to die is gain. To live is Christ, and to suffer is Christ, to go through is Christ, oh and to die is gain.

I dont think its more "pure" there are many gospel songs where Jesus is highly exalted, and who's music has not crossed the secular airways.
While I do not "prefer" contemporary christian music.. Prefer as in it is not my first choice. I do however have a huge variety of christian music.
Also the by who's label they are own, says alot of how their cd will sound.
Also by the way. Fred hammonds new CD is out, and can we say it is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the song by Daryl Coley For the Good of Them Lead: The race is not given to the swift nor to the strong but to the one that endureth til the end There will be problems Sometimes you'll have to walk alone but I know things will work out yes they will for the good of them, who love the Lord. Eyes have not seen, nor ears heard of the good things that the Lord has instore, for they who love him Sometimes you may have to cry and some times you may have to walk alone but i know, i know, it will all work out for the good of them, Hallelujah, thank you Jesus It will work for the good of them who love, love the Lord Chorus: No matter what the problem (no matter what the situation) You can't solve it (its not in your ability to solve it) They will come (they're coming) they will go (but don't you worry) But you don't have to worry) It will work out. (and know that the lord is working it out) For the good of them whoo Love, the Lord. * loves the part where he says " just make sure that you really really love him, because if you love him, you trust him, you believe him, hallelujah. All things are working together for your good, according to his calling in your life..hey hey, its working out for your good. yes lord, he's already worked it, already been performed, trust in the Lord, wait on him. ok..I done got worked up at work.

Jas is that song Darryl Coley or Milton Brunson?
Maybe it is me but I get nothing out of some of Coley songs especially the one Beck posted... It is so sad to me, because how is a storm going to tear your heart apart where no love can dwell and you are in Christ?
The words just don't make sense to me!!!

I heard the last song through Daryl Coley its on the cd just Oh the Lamb. Question: What exactly are you looking to get out of the song? Well aren't we made to praise and worship God? Don't we worship and praise God through our music? What praise is God getting out of us singing about a broken heart where no love can dwell... that is first of all contradictory to the Word.... The problem I have with most traditional gospel (African American) music is yes the vocals are slamming the organ chords are correct but is it edifying to Christ.... Does the music uplift Jesus in anyway.... Jesus can't be king and lord and you have a broken heart with no love.....

[/b] You never been through something that has torn your heart apart and it was the peace of God that mended it back together? that part of the song isn't about the broken heart, its about gaining peace. the song is very edifying to me, because it deals with living for Christ, suffering for the cause of Christ. In my opinion I think you are stereotyping the music and not listen to the real message of the song.. Fred Hammond sings the song.. No weapon formed against me shall prosper... that song is awesome to me.. Donnie mcclurklin sings a song called "I'll trust you Lord", and Stand..those are also great songs as well... getting back to Daryl coley.. he sings a song called "Sovereign " and he's preparing me... Great gospel songs that lifts up Christ. Commissioned back in the day... all of there songs was based on scripture.
