Maybe the reason he said they must be the "husband of one wife" is not that they be required to be married but rather that they not have multiple wives. Were they not living in a time and place where there was a lot of multiple wives or men having more than one wife? That's probably what the scripture really means. But onest again MAN gets hold of a scripture and makes a doctrine out of it without really knowing or at least even studying the times that the scripture was written. Matthew Commentary says: 2. He must be the husband of one wife; not having given a bill of divorce to one, and then taken another, or not having many wives at once, as at that time was too common both among Jews and Gentiles, especially among the Gentiles. Why can't a person that's not married just be a minister of the gospel?

We need to keep some things in the Biblical context of the times. It wasnt uncommon for a man to have MULTIPLE wives. I believe the scripture was saying that a man could not be a polygamist and be a pastor or bishop. Bingo!

I agree that those who are unmarried can be ministers..many lives have been destroyed because denominational by-laws and guidelines say that they "must be husbands of one"..
How important it is that we keep things within proper context.
