I was on my way into work this morning, this thought came to mind:
The best way to determine what the anointing is, what the anointing is for etc. Is to take every scripture using the words anoint, anointed, anointest, anointing etc. and define it, and use it in it's proper context according to scripture.
Anything other than that may just be our opinion, though food for thought.

LONG, but worth the read.
The anointing is the power to do what God has called you to do. The anointing is empowerment for service. The anointing is being in the same mind as the spirit, being in tune with the spirit, having the discernment of the spirit and being used by the spirit.
Zech 4:6 Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty. Without the anointing, you are useless for the work of God. We can talk about leadership skills and we can teach courses and all that is good but the greatest leader can not lead properly without the anointing.
What is the anointing? What does the term anointing mean?
There are two words for it. One in the Hebrew which is mashach, which means to rub or smear with oil, to paint, to cover over, to consecrate.
The Greek word for anointing is Chiro. It means to anoint, to cover over, to rub with oil. It is always used of rubbing or sprinkling with oil in a religious sense.
The anointing means to be rubbed, painted or smeared with oil. We realize that oil is representation of the Holy spirit so to be anointed would be to be rubbed, painted or smeared by the Holy Ghost.
When you take a bath you don’t just put soap on your hands and then wash it off, you rub it in, you smear it in, you work it in until you are clean.
The working of the Holy Spirit and the anointing is the process of rubbing and smearing out all the sin. It is a complete cleansing, a consecration, a new creature for the service of God.
The cleansing of the Holy Spirit can also be painful sometimes. But for the anointing to come upon us we must allow him to do his work.
The anointing always starts with the head. The prophet would pour the oil over the person saturating them with the oil.
Psalm 133:2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down upon the collar of his robes.
The oil would then flow down to the rest of the body covering each part until it dripped on the ground.
Jesus is head of the church and he was anointed. That anointing flows down to the church.
The anointing is more that a divine touch by the Holy Spirit. A lot of people feel the anointing is momentary to help with specific tasks and that happens but that is not the true anointing.
God can choose to anoint me on occasion for his service or a specific task but we need to live in the anointing.
A perfect example of this is Samson. He never lived in the anointing but the spirit anointed him at times.
Judges 15: 14When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting against him. Then the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him; and the ropes that were on his arms became like flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds broke loose from his hands. 15He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and killed a thousand men with it.
1 John 2:27 - “But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.”
Let’s look at David:
1 Samuel 16:10 10Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The LORD has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered, “but he is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.
From then on David was changed man. He was never the same after that. Take notice of verse 13, “and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon David in power.” Before the anointing, David was just a shepherd boy and that is all he was. Nothing great was said about David. After the anointing, the spirit of God was there whenever he needed the power.
The anointing is for all. The two words that translate into anointing that we looked at. There are two words that come out of these two words Mashach and Chiro that we use today.
Chiro translates into Christ and that is the root for Christian. The followers of Jesus were first pinned Christians in Antioch in the chapter of Acts.
The word Christian means follower of Christ. The name Christians was given to believers as a form of mockery because people watched believers in Christ doing the same things that Jesus did in the same way he did it when he was alive.
The term in it’s actual original form means “little anointed one”. When we are saved we become chosen or “little anointed ones.” We are set apart .
1 Chr 16:20-22 And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people; He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
D. Please take note of the phrase “mine anointed” in verse 21. It has reference to all of God’s covenant people.
1 John 2:20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
1 Cor 12:4-8 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

This reminds me of the olive press, in order to get to the oil, the olive has to be squeezed!. Squeezing can be painful, however the process brings about the anointing, the cleansings, a character building of the believer.

JASMINE - that is the part we miss... we want the anointing, but not the pressing and pain it involves...

JASMINE - that is the part we miss... we want the anointing, but not the pressing and pain it involves... Does one have to go through pressing and pain in order to be anointed? In other words is being anointed based on what we do?

We hear this all of the time but I believe that one can be anointed w/o hurts, harms dissappointments - because most of this stem from the Christian walk in general.

Amen Misskay, not the hurt, harm or dissapointments as we know and use to describe "physical pain", but even such things brings about a character in us that GOD can be pleased with. but the pain of crucifying your flesh, the pain of relinquishing your will and allowing the spirit to have free course. Annointed vesselss are operated by the Spirit of GOD. nothing we have done of ourselves, but allowing the spirit to mold and make us and being willing to sacrifice all for God
